NICE guidelines recommend giving magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) to women at risk of preterm labour, to help protect the baby’s brain.

PReCePT (Prevention of cerebral palsy in preterm labour), was codesigned by patients and staff at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and the West of England AHSN. A quality improvement (QI) approach, it was trialled in five trusts in the West of England in 2014. It’s now being rolled-out at national level to all maternity units in England, via the AHSN network, funded by NHS England. Embedded within the programme is a cluster randomised control trial, the PReCePT study, in 48 maternity units, funded by the Health Foundation Scaling Up Improvement Programme. The research trial will assess whether an enhanced QI intervention improves the uptake of MgSO4 in preterm deliveries over and above the national programme roll-out. NIHR CLAHRC West is the evaluation partner on the trial.
