Early Supported Discharge of well, late preterm babies (Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust)

North West CoastReproductive Health and Childbirth
Start Date: 1 Jul 2017 End Date: 1 Dec 2018

Five percent of babies are born 4-6 weeks early and often need to stay in hospital to receive specialist care. This can cause health inequalities associated with:

  • Financial Stress
  • Breastfeeding
  • Development
  • Separation/Attachment
  • Length of Hospital Stay

NEST seeks to address these inequalities by promoting early discharge home.

CLAHRC NWC will evaluate the transition of support, practical help and advice to parents of babies discharged home from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Royal Preston Hospital. Existing discharge care processes for late pre-term infants will be explored in order to inform the development of an earlier supported care discharge pathway and package.
