Effectiveness of Emergency Multidisciplinary Units

Currently there are 10 million people in the UK who are over 65 years old, and this is projected to increase by 5.5 million in the next 20 years. The number over the age of 80 is estimated to double in the next 20 years to 6 million.  A growing older population will be accompanied by an increasing number of people with cognitive decline and dementia which, when combined with a physical decline in health, will have a large impact on health and social care services. This is a major issue and decision makers across the NHS are attempting to reconfigure services to deal with the year on year increase in hospital admissions, often with an inadequate evidence base. The experience of elderly patients in particular in the acute hospital setting, and the poor quality that they experience is the focus of many recent reports.

This project will investigate if integrating mental health expertise into comprehensive geriatric assessment delivered in interface settings reduce medical admission, bed usage, sedation, carer stress and subsequent care home placement.
